![]() ![]() Blaise Pascal (1623-1662), a later and rather ardent Augustinian, insisted, as cited above, that unless one loves the truth one cannot know it. Of course, there are ways to “hold” supposed “truths” that renders those claims impervious to criticism, counter-arguments, and thus not open to public validation. My interest is with the conditions of holding truths as truths, and thus publicly accessible and even publicly adjudicated. Augustine, a saint in my church, wrote that a people was a multitude defined by the common objects of their love.” And he asks, “What are the common objects we as Americans love, that define us as Americans?” My concern is not how the President answers his own question that is readily available for readers. At one point in his address, Biden says, “Many centuries ago, St. President Biden’s Inauguration was suffused with religion: specifically, Catholic Christianity. My sighting of religion in today’s column will be just as commonplace: what is the religious meaning of holding truths? Religion, implicit or explicit, is everywhere: the flags paraded by rioters in the US Capital-Q-anon, Proud Boys, Kek, Pepe the Frog, and the Alt-Right-decoded, endlessly, in the media the doctors and hospital staff fighting a global pandemic committed to human life and dignity teachers and faculty who, in various ways and means, fight ignorance and, human commitments, convictions, devotions, and hopes as general features of many religions: all of these are sighted in abundance in today’s world. ![]() This has made the work of a Sightings columnist rather easy. Over the last years in this country, we have witnessed an onslaught against truth in the name of fake news, so-called post-truth culture, the proliferation of conspiracy theories, predictions envisioning the end of the republic, and upsurges in militias and hate-groups, each of which champions their own version of truth. Meanwhile too many religious people, their leaders, and their doctrines live assured of the absolute truth of their convictions and their rights to privilege and property, assigning others to hovels or death. Generations of women, from Sojourner Truth to suffragettes to the Woman’s Movement the world over, have struggled against tyranny, abuse, poverty, political and religious exclusion, and all manner of hatred. But later, in the voice of Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lewis, and so many others, dignity was recognized for-man. Public figures in the United States assure us that some truths are self-evident, especially about rights and human equality, only to have historians note that the self-evidence originally obtained only in the case of free white men. Philosophers and theologians debate whether or not there are “moral truths,” and if so, what they are. In the academy, there are disputes about scientific truth versus truth as disclosure, deconstructions of truth, and so-called regimes of truth. It is no secret that we have been living through a global debate about truth. It was a sign that I, too, was capable of pushing through the depressive state I found myself trapped in. To know that there were others - especially adults - who went through the same things I was and had not only made it out of those dark places, but were now thriving, meant the world to me. I didn’t feel like I could talk about these things with my parents, so the artists who sang about loneliness and sadness were the first adults I’d been introduced to who knew what I was going through. I first experienced depression and anxiety around 6th grade, but since I’d never been taught what they were, I didn’t have a word for it - until I found emo music. ![]() Emo music was a shout back from the void, telling me I wasn’t worthless or invaluable like I had started to tell myself over and over. When I first heard All Time Low’s “Missing You” and listened as lead singer Alex Gaskarth sang, “Now don’t lose your fight, kid, it only takes a little push to pull on through, with so much left to do, you’ll be missing out, and we’ll be missing you,” I felt a sense of comfort that had become foreign. It served as a processing outlet for the strange feelings I was developing - feelings I couldn’t voice. I typically wrote my thoughts and feelings into poems and short stories, but emo music was the first time I heard songs that reflected how I felt inside. When you’ve been raised on mundane Coldplay and innocent pigtails, it’s hard to ignore the allure of leather jackets and mosh pits.ĭespite the near-deafening volume of drums, guitar and yelling in most emo songs, the lyrics were the loudest to me. So when it came time for me to find some sort of individual identity, I can’t help but wonder if I just went for shock value. At that point in my life, the clothes I wore, my interests and music taste were all based off my parents’ preferences. When you’re heading into a new school with a bunch of new people, it seems like the perfect time to do a decent amount of self-rebranding. ![]() ![]() My fascination with emo culture originated around the time I began middle school. No, I worshipped what emo-Tumblr called “The Holy Trinity:” Panic! At the Disco, Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance.Ĭombine Panic! At the Disco’s ridiculous song titles and never-ending theatrics, Fall Out Boy’s quasi-rock sound and mega-hottie bassist Pete Wentz with My Chemical Romance’s depressing lyrics, and you’re looking at the stars of Phoebe’s Spotify playlists. Now, I’ll clarify for the sake of my own reputation that I’m not talking about “screamo” - screams of bloody murder over ear-decimating background guitar. I knew I wasn’t cool in the eyes of my friends or family or kids at school, but the music I listened to made me feel like a different person - not the quiet, short, insecure girl I was. Starting seventh grade, I was around 5’3 and felt like a total nobody, so whisper-screaming songs about the “bloody heartbreak of love” and hammering air guitar in my bedroom made me feel kind of cool. But even though I’ve grown out of the emo phase, I refuse to compromise on one thing: emo music, which gave me a sense of security I was sorely lacking in middle school, still deserves a place in my playlists. My friends give me a lot of crap for how cringey I used to be with my flower crowns and band T-Shirts. It’s a scene I retrospectively roll my eyes at, just as I do thinking about the rest of that day - how I listened to my “emo favorites” playlist on full volume through the tangled wires of my headphones on the bus ride to school and shied off the weird looks I garnered from wearing a beanie in gym class. Halfway through seventh-grade, and I’m sitting on the floor of my bedroom lacing up my brand-new, black high-top Converse shoes, wondering what my friends will think of my freshly-dyed, bright-red hair. ![]() Tunnelbear reddit1/1/2024 ![]() ![]() ![]() Netflix’s content library offered in India doesn’t do justice to the price charged in the region. Honda passport trim levels1/1/2024 ![]() ![]() But it still feels stable at highway speeds and tracks very well an SUV driving more like a traditional SUV didn’t bother me. The added ground clearance does make the Passport feel a bit more like a truck, with more body roll and the sensation that you’re sitting higher off the ground. I hope these changes make their way onto the Pilot, as well. You feel more connected to the Passport and the road when piloting it (pun intended). The result of these updates is an SUV that feels more alive. Both these changes fix problems I had with the Pilot, in that its accelerator felt sluggish at times and the steering was too muted, needing more bite. Honda said it made two key changes intended to make the Passport better off-road, but the tweaks may be more impactful on-road: The throttle mapping is more aggressive and it has a quicker steering ratio, making the steering more responsive. EPA fuel economy estimates check in at 20/25/22 mpg city/highway/combined with FWD AWD trails slightly at 19/24/21 mpg. All-wheel drive costs $1,900 on lower trims and is standard on Elite models. A nine-speed automatic is the Passport’s only transmission, and front-wheel drive is standard. The Passport features the same 280-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 that’s found in the Pilot. It also gets a few changes to the powertrain and steering that I found improved the Passport’s driving experience handily versus the Pilot. After that comes EX-L, Touring and Elite trims. While the Pilot starts with an LX model (as do most Honda vehicles), the Passport eschews that base trim to start with a Sport. ![]() The Passport is also sold in fewer trim levels. (Front-wheel-drive Passports have 7.5 inches.) All-wheel-drive Passports also have 0.8 inch more ground clearance than the Pilot, making them more capable off-road, for a total of 8.1 inches. The Passport is 6.0 inches shorter, almost all of it coming off the rear with the removal of the third row. There are also a few key differences, starting with the most obvious one: size. The same multimedia system is found in both vehicles, and climbing into the Passport felt very familiar to what I experienced when testing the 2019 Pilot. Beyond that, the two SUVs have the same powertrain and even have identical dashboards. The Passport and the Pilot ride on the same 111-inch wheelbase (also shared with the Ridgeline, Honda’s mid-size pickup truck). Compare the Passport with those vehicles here. The Passport now competes in that class against the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer, also recently reborn, and other five-seat mid-size mainstays like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ford Edge. There hadn’t been anything between the compact CR-V and the three-row Pilot - a class that’s becoming increasingly crowded. The Passport plugs a mid-sized gap in Honda’s lineup. It would be a mistake, however, to think of the Passport as just another clone Honda has given it enough distinction that I prefer the Passport to its larger sibling in a few key areas. Much like its predecessor, this new Passport also shares much of its DNA with another vehicle, but this time it’s one of Honda’s own: the three-row Pilot. The previous Passport, which was discontinued in 2002, was a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo that simply wore the Honda name. The 2019 Honda Passport might be an all-new vehicle, but its name is not. Versus the competition: Though it’s priced higher than most competitors, the Passport features enough equipment and safety features to justify the difference. The verdict: The Passport offers a solid mix of on- and off-road capability, along with a robust set of safety features, in a spacious package with good passenger and cargo room. ![]() AuthorWrite something about yourself.
