The freefall drop into the horizontal curve applied a g-force of 4.5 on the riders.Ī pair of guide rails ran downward along the outside of the Sky Screamer tower before curving into the horizontal braking runout. After the sounding of the klaxon, the gondola was released into freefall. Once at the top, the gondola was disengaged from the lift chain and pushed forward into the drop position. The ride lifted gondola up through a shaft in the tower's center by a lift chain. These were smaller rollers located on the bottom of the gondola. The gondola used one set of wheels to go up the lift and down the drop (four large wheels at each back corner) However, it used a second set of wheels in the transfer and loading and unloading area of the ride. It featured eight gondolas, each holding four riders. Sky Screamer consisted of a 131 feet (40 m) tower with a horizontal braking runout. That's when the traffic picked up once people realized they could cut through to Woodhue and onto William Cannon. The property where The Oaks is was cow pasture then! Once the upper part of the neighborhood was built up along Woodhue, my street was put through to there creating a perfect thoroughfare. So my neighborhood just made a little loop into the woods and consisted of only 5 streets. It was just my street, plus the two streets to the east of mine, and the two connecting streets. At that time, the rest of the neighborhood hadn't been built yet, including where you are. At that time Stassney was just a two lane street. lol Seriously, our street has always been the main entrance to this neighborhood from Stassney. I know you live in my neighborhood, and figured since you do, you probably drive down my street every day since everyone else does too. The Frost Bank Tower and 360 Condos also show up here. Now onto Garrison Park just up the hill from Crockett. Right behind me there was a guy, who I guess was in gym class, jump roping outside in the snow. And as I rode down my street with fat snowflakes smacking me in the face, I opened a my mouth and ate a few.Įarlier in the morning there had been sleet, but starting around 11:30 am, it changed over to all snow. Riding my bike in the snow, now that was a first. I decided to hop on my bike and head down to my old high school, Crockett High, and also up the hill to Garrison Park. Still, it was the biggest snowfall we'd seen in at least 6 years. It snowed most of the morning and afternoon in North Austin, while it only snowed about 2 hours in South Austin. North Austin got around 2 inches, while here in South Austin we only got about a quarter inch. Austin actually saw some snow on Tuesday.
